Attorney in notable radical cases dies

Leonard Weinglass, an attorney who represented clients in high-profile political cases ranging from the Chicago Seven in the 1960s to the so-called Cuban Five in recent years, has died in New York City. Colleague Michael Krinsky says Weinglass died Wednesday night of pancreatic cancer. He was 77.
Krinsky calls Weinglass ``a modern day Clarence Darrow' who devoted his life to defending people, usually on political grounds. Weinglass's clients included Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo in the Pentagon Papers case. He also represented Angela Davis, Kathy Boudin and Mumia Abu-Jamal. A private funeral is planned, followed by a public memorial later this spring.
