The rupee gave up its overnight firmness against dollar on the interbank market due to heavy buying of the greenback, dealers said. The rupee lost 20 paisa versus the US currency for buying and selling at 85.35 and 85.40 in process of trading, they said.
INTERBANK MARKET RATES: At the weekend euro slipped against US dollar and could remain under pressure in the short run on concern about a worsening debt crisis in Portugal following the collapse of the country's government. While a pullback is likely, traders said euro should be supported as long as it holds above $1.40. Expectations of a euro-zone interest rate rise next month have helped the single currency's resilience despite worries about heavily indebted Portugal and Spain.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee gained marginally in relation to dollar for buying and selling at 85.15 and 85.30, they added. The rupee recovered 93 paisa in terms of euro for buying and selling at Rs 119.45 and Rs 119.95, they said.
