Police arrested over 40 doctors during their demonstration in front of Punjab Assembly to press the government to announce raise in their salaries. After the arrests of protesting doctors, they were shifted to different police stations. Doctors also had a minor scuffle with police before their arrests.
On the 29th day of their strike, doctors of different city hospitals gathered in front of Punjab Assembly to press the government for the acceptance of their demands regarding raise in their salaries. The protesting doctors blocked the road and chanted slogans in favour of their demands. They expressed their resolve to continue their strike till the acceptance of their demands.
It may be noted that the strike of doctors was started from March 1, due to which outdoor facilities for patients were suspended. On Tuesday, the strike of young doctors working in various public sector hospitals entered the 29th day. Protest demonstration by doctors on the Mall led to traffic mess, causing serious hardships for people and patients as out-door departments of almost all hospitals in the provincial metropolis remained closed.
Doctors of public sector hospitals of the city, protesting under the banner of the Young Doctors Association, blocked the Mall. The protesters were carrying banners inscribed with demands and also staged a sit-in in front of the Punjab Assembly, which disrupted traffic on The Mall. They raised slogans against the provincial government for not accepting their demands.
As they continued protest, traffic in almost whole city choked and long queues of vehicles were seen in different areas of the city. A number of people were stuck in traffic muddles and thus could not reach their offices in time. With the absence of doctors at different hospitals, poor patients had to suffer a lot, as they had to approach different private clinics for medical check-ups. A housewife, Farakh Naz said she was feeling pain in her eyes. She reached the OPD of Eye Ward of Sir Ganga Ram hospital but had to return home without any check-up.
She said the government on one side made tall claims of public welfare while on the other hand poor patients are running from pillar to post for routine medical check-up. She urged the Chief Minister to take notice of the situation and save the ailing patients from hardships. She said the way doctors are behaving does not suit to their noble profession.
