Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) stopped awarding Satellite TV licences and landing rights permission to new entrants in electronic media due to over-stretched market. In a press conference, Acting Chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar Mirza said that authority has turned down all the fresh requests for rights of satellite beaming in Pakistan.
"The Authority has rejected requests for issuance of 37 satellite TV and FM licences due to saturated market and limited capacity of distribution networks", he commented. He said that government is modifying Pemra Regulation in accordance with up gradation in electronic equipment and modern technology.
Chairman further said under the new regulations, authority is bound to issue landing right permission and penetration of Satellite TV signal in country after getting clearance from the directors of the requesting companies. "We can't allow any music, entertainment, cartoon network and other such TV channels to operate in Pakistan whose director failed to get security clearance from relevant authorities", he said.
He said satellite television is provision of TV services through satellite. The Television channel could be seen anywhere in the world where the foot print or beam of the Satellite is received. Currently 85 companies have licences. He further disclosed that no licence to broadcast sport channel from Pakistan has been issued. He said a private channel falsely claims of holding licences for operating sport channel in Pakistan and was forcefully closed by the government. "On these false accusations, we are filing a defamation claim against them", he added.
