A delegation of Permanent Representatives of five major troops contributing countries to the UN peacekeeping operations, headed by Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon, met with Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon on Monday and drew his attention towards the issue of remuneration for the UN peacekeepers.
Currently, remuneration for UN peacekeepers is dismally low and the delegation asked for its early revision. The last review of troop cost took place in 1992. The issue has been pending since then. However, in 2002 the General Assembly had made a decision for ad-hoc increase of 2 percent in the troop cost over the next two years. The Secretary General assured the delegation that he would work for early resolution of this long-standing issue. The delegation included, permanent representatives of Pakistan, India, Egypt, Bangladesh and Nigeria.
