Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has stored 1.4 MAF rainwater in the three main reservoirs Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma in the third week of April that would be used for sowing the Kharif crops cotton and rice next month.
According to April 22 rivers flows and reservoirs level report of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), water level in Tarbela has risen to 1396 feet above sea level, 18 ft above its dead level with the water storage of 0.210 MAF, water level in Mangla dam has risen to 1115 ft against its dead level of 1040 ft, with one million acre feet water preserved in its belly. Water level in Chashma barrage has risen by 10 ft with storage of 0.194 MAF water.
Keeping in view substantial decrease in hydel power generation from Tarbela, Mangla and Ghazi Barotha hydel electricity producing units, Irsa released 5,000 cusecs more water each from Tarbela and Mangla dams on Friday. It increased downstream Tarbela dam discharge from 15,000 cusecs to 20,000 cusecs and from Mangla dam from 35,000 cusecs to 40,000 cusecs. The water inflow in River Indus at Tarbela is 29,700 cusecs, river Jhelum at Mangla 56,600 cusecs, river Kabul at Nowshera 30,400 cusecs and river Chenab at Marala 25,100 cusecs water.
