National Institute of Electronics (NIE) on Tuesday initiated a balancing, modernisation and rehabilitation project (BMR project) for construction of a new building at its premises, under which new laboratories will be established. These labs will be established in the field of automotive electronic, consumer electronics and a small scale production line.
Besides this, NIE is also carrying out design and development work in vital areas of electronics and establishing close liaison with other organisations engaged in research and development, academic and production activities. According to official data available, total funds allocated for NIE, for development and non-development side during the last five years were Rs 673.424 million, out of which Rs 489.418 million were released and Rs 479.916 million were utilised.
Besides this, a new laboratory was also established for databases development by procuring latest equipment and software in the field. According to official sources in NIE, 1,200 trainees were imparted training in different fields of electronics, computer science, engineering and Information Technology.
Official sources further said that the electronic communication engineering laboratory was also upgraded by adding additional equipment's and providing training in the field. According to official data available, product testing and certification accreditation lab was also established in accordance with ISO/IEC/17025 standards to provide testing and certification of electronics products.

Giving further details, the official sources said through its internship program, the institute had helped different universities in imparting practical training to their post-graduate and graduate students. NIE is also providing consultancy to Pakistan Locomotive factory Risalpur for repair of un-serviceable machinery and equipment.
