The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation increased by 14 percent in July-May 2010-11 over the same period of last year on the back of significant increase in the prices of essential commodities, according to Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS).
Official CPI inflation figures, released by the FBS on Wednesday, showed an increase of 0.23 percent in the inflation in May 2011 over previous month, and 13.23 percent in the same month of last year.
Analysis of the data showed an increase of 13.23 percent in food inflation with 15 percent rise in the prices of non-perishable items, and 21.69 percent in perishable items.
According to group-wise percentage changes in CPI during July-May, 2010-11 and July-May, 2009-10, the price of apparel, textile & footwear increased by11.85 percent, house rent 7.22 percent, fuel & lighting 15.76 percent, household, furniture & equipment etc 10.08 percent, transport & communication14.34 percent, recreation & entertainment 10.78 percent, education 6.02 percent, cleaning, laundry & personal appearance 12.06 percent and cost of medicare went up by 14.84 percent.
The main commodities, which showed increase in their prices in food and beverages were potatoes (16.61 percent), milk powder (5.90 percent), milk products (3.87 percent), beverages (3.66 percent), milk fresh (3.37 percent), condiments (2.73 percent), jam, tomato, pickles & vinegar (2.01 percent), cereals (1.80 percent), betel leaves & nuts (1.71 percent), cooking oil (1.67 percent), bakery & confectionery (1.09 percent), gur (1.04 percent), and meat (1.02 percent).
Among the textile group, the price of cotton cloth increaased by (3.66percent), hosiery (2.39 percent), readymade garments (2.11 percent) and silk, linen, woolen/cloth (1.64 percent). In fuel & lighting, the price of kerosene oil and firewood increased (5.90 percent) and (2.54 percent) respectively.
Household, furniture & equipment etc:- Sewing machine, clock & needles (2.26 percent), plastic products (2.21 percent), household equipment (1.90 percent), utensils (1.84 percent), refrigerator & air conditioner (1.54 percent), suitcase (1.22 percent) and furniture ready made (1.11 percent).
Transport & communication:- Petrol (5.94 percent), diesel (4.86 percent), transport fare/charges (3.38 percent), CNG filling charges (1.72 percent), tyre & tube (1.29 percent), service charges (1.18 percent) and vehicles (1.03 percent). Education:- Tution fees (1.33 percent) and stationery (1.04 percent).
Cleaning laundry & personal appearance:- Jewellery (4.06 percent), hair cut & beauty parlour charges (2.96 percent) and cosmetics (1.36 percent). Medicare:- Drugs & medicines (3.68 percent) and doctor''s fee (1.44 percent).
The main commodities, which showed a decrease in their prices during May, 2011 over April, 2011 in food & beverages were tomatoes (45.21 percent), onions (18.72 percent), vegetables (10.82 percent), wheat (9.39 percent), chicken farm (8.23 percent), eggs (7.35 percent), wheat flour (4.88 percent), pulse masoor (3.85 percent), pulse gram (3.14 percent), maida (2.99 percent), besan (2.82 percent), sugar (1.94 percent), pulse mash (1.93 percent), pulse moong (1.54 percent) and fish (1.46 percent).
The indices averaged for the period of July, 2010 to May, 2011 increased over the same period of 2009-10 by 14.00 percent (CPI), 23.25 percent (WPI) and 18.30 percent (SPI).
