Renewing his call for mid-term elections, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Wednesday said he would not be part of the grand opposition alliance. After the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) won AJK polls, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif along with MQM has come out swinging against it, advocating formation of a grand opposition alliance to bring it down, feeling betrayed by top PPP leadership.
The opposition parties accuse the government of not living up to its promises made with them over the last three years of incumbency and providing no relief to people and arguably the straw that broke the camel's back, the alleged rigging in AJK recent elections. The PTI chief said that efforts by some political parties to form a grand opposition alliance has nothing to do with steering the country out of prevailing crisis rather a last-ditch effort by them to achieve personal goals.
"PTI will not support a grand alliance against the incumbents which is likely to be led by the PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif," Imran told a press conference. This is an exercise in futility by PML-N, he added, to improve the position of his party [PML-N] through such tactics as its graph has badly gone down during the last three years due to friendly opposition. Imran said that it was PML-N, which backed the government when PTI demanded midterm elections some three months back, saying what it called that saving the democratic system is indispensable.
"They [Sharif brothers] must make it clear to the nation that did their support benefited the [democratic] system except paving way for the regime to further strengthen itself due to their support," he questioned. Imran said that the only to save the state institution from rampant corruption is the midterm elections. He said expecting free and fair polls under President Zardari is like building castle in the air.
He appealed the Supreme Court to come forward to rescue the nation from the corrupt regime and form a neutral caretaker set-up a order to save the country from further destruction. Only a neutral caretaker set up, he maintained, with the directions of the Supreme Court can hold free and fair elections under an independent election commission.
The PTI chairman also condemned killing of three protestors in clash with riot police in Mianwali - which is also his hometown. He demanded of the Punjab government to hold a thorough probe into barbarism and atrocities inflicted by police on peaceful protesters.
