Supreme Court (SC) disposed of 1,781 cases during the month of June 2011 whereas 1,180 new cases were instituted. The backlog in Supreme Court on 1st July 2011 is 19,550 cases, stated in a press release issued here on Tuesday. According to data, the number of cases pending with the apex court on 1st June was 20,151 cases, while 1,180 new cases were instituted during the month of June 2011.
The progressive total of pending cases as on 30th June comes to 21,331.Out of these, 1,781 cases were disposed of in the month of June 2011, so the backlog on1st July 2011 stands at 19,550 cases The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudary constituted benches for the Principal Seat, Islamabad and Branch Registries to expedite the hearing and clear the backlog even during court vacation.
In spite of the hearing of some urgent nature, cases like ZAB Reference case, Hajj scam case, NICL scam case and Safe City Project case, etc were also heard along with other regular cases, SC remained committed and decided a good number of cases. The Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Judges of Supreme Court remained committed to accelerated /expeditious disposal of the cases and further reduce the backlog.
The Judges continued to hear the cases on various benches with the aim to provide relief to the litigants. At Principal Seat Islamabad 490 cases were instituted while 519 cases were disposed of during the month of June, 2011. At Branch Registry Lahore 422 cases were instituted while 968 cases were disposed of. At Branch Registry Karachi 120 cases were instituted while 192 cases were disposed of.
At Branch Registry Peshawar 133 cases were instituted while 102 cases were disposed of and in Quetta 15 cases were instituted. Therefore the total number of cases instituted during the month was 1,180 while total disposal of cases at Principal seat and branch registries was 1,781.-PR
