The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has conferred Best University Teacher Award on 57 faculty members of public and private sector universities in recognition of their dedicated efforts to enhance the academic and research atmosphere in their respective institutions.
For the year 2010, 118 nominations were received from 60 public and private sector universities/degree awarding institutions. After scrutiny and detailed evaluation, 57 teachers have been selected. The award includes a Certificate of Merit and a cash prize of Rs 100,000. The performance of the teachers is evaluated on the basis of Academic Work Performance (65 percent), Research Work Performance (24 percent) and Creative Work (11 percent).
Senator Salim Saifullah Khan, Chairman, Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan was the chief guest at the award ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, he appreciated the HEC for launching a programme for recognising teachers. He said that HEC is a regulatory body and there should be no political interference in its affairs.
The senator said that recognition is a driving force for putting in more efforts to achieve further excellence. He urged the teachers to be a role model for their colleagues as well as students. He said that he had already donated 1000 kanal land for a cadet college in Lakki Marwat and he is ready to donate another 2000 kanal if the Government agrees to establish a university.
Dr Javaid R. Laghari, Chairperson HEC, said that faculty is the heart of any university and reputation of the institution depends on their performance. He emphasised that the universities are supposed to build communities and economies but it is not possible without proactive contribution of teachers. Dr Laghari said that faculty development has been the foremost priority of HEC. "Our target is to produce good graduates, good researchers and good teachers with no compromise on quality."-PR
