Like other parts of the country, a three-day national immunisation campaign against polio would be launched across the Punjab province from July 18 to 20. During the campaign, more than 16 million children up to five years of age would be administered polio drops.
Health department Punjab has issued necessary instructions to the Executive District Officers (Health) of all the districts and they have been directed to ensure strict monitoring of the campaign aimed at eradicating the disease from the country.
The provincial government has asked the EDOs (Health) to make the polio campaign a success by taking personal interest and working hard to maintain the present polio free status of Punjab. A spokesman of the department said: "Eradication of polio from the country is not only in the national interest but it is a part of our national commitment to international partners. WHO, Unicef and other agencies are extending co-operation in this noble cause."
It may be noted that no polio case has so far been registered in Punjab due to effective monitoring and surveillance by the department. Meanwhile, Secretary Health Punjab Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan, while presiding over a meeting to review the performance of the hospitals and progress of development schemes in district Khushab, directed medical superintendents of public sector hospitals to establish special counters for senior citizens for their help and guidance. He said that cleanliness in the hospitals, punctuality of staff and good attitude of the doctors and paramedics with the patients should be the first priority of the administration of any hospital. He said that EDOs (Health) would be held accountable for lapse in these responsibilities at district level.
The secretary health directed the EDO Health and other officers to personally monitor the construction work of development schemes. He directed that officers should not rely on their staff for official work and personally look after the matters for early disposal and to improve performance. He said that optimum utilisation of the health facilities by the public must be ensured. He urged upon the officers that they should perform their duties as good health managers. He directed that the ongoing development schemes should be completed in time and funds should be utilised in a transparent manner.
Jehanzeb Khan said that he would personally visit the district hospitals and inspection teams consisting on senior officers of the department would also visit to evaluate performance of DHQ and THQ hospitals. He directed that the role of Lady Health Visitors should be made more effective for enhancing the patients turn over in the hospitals and motivating rural population especially pregnant women to benefit from these health facilities.
Earlier, EDO Health Khushab gave briefing regarding the performance of health facilities. Special Secretary Health Wasim Mukhtar, Director General Health Punjab Dr Aslam Chaudhry, Addl. Secretaries and other senior officers attended the meeting.
