Rory McIlroy started to work his way up the British Open leaderboard in Friday's second round as he looked to follow up his US Open win with another Major title four weeks later. The 22-year-old Ulsterman produced a mixed bag in Thursday's opening round, bogeying two of his first three holes before steadying to come in with a one-over 71, six strokes off the lead.
On Friday, with sunshine and a light breeze replacing the dark clouds and gusting wind that greeted him the previous day, his customary, youthful swagger was back in place. McIlroy opened with five straight pars, spurning birdie opportunities at three of them, before he bagged one at the par-three sixth, where earlier in the day Tom Watson had recorded a hole in one.
He then birdied the par-five seventh, but skewed his five-iron approach to eight right off the green into a patch of flattened-down rough and though he played an excellent lobbed recovery shot, he failed to save par with the subsequent 15-foot putt.
