Online retail giant Amazon plans to unveil a tablet computer before October in a bid to carve out a slice of a growing market dominated by Apple's iPad, The Wall Street Journal reported on July 13. The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the matter," also said Amazon plans to release two updated versions of its Kindle electronic reader in the third quarter of the year.
The Journal said the tablet from the Seattle-based Amazon will have a roughly nine-inch (22.8-centimeter) screen and will be powered by Google's Android operating system.
It will not have a camera, the Journal said, but will allow users to watch videos, read electronic books and listen to digital music they purchase or rent from Amazon.
In Short: More than 1m Twitter 'apps' registered
SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter on July 11 announced that the number of applications registered at the popular microblogging service has topped a million. Word of the milestone came as the San Francisco-based start-up launched a new website at dev.twitter.com for software developers interested in tailoring fun, hip or functional programs for Twitter.
A new Twitter application is registered every 1.5 seconds, with the number of "apps" soaring from 150,000 a year ago, according to the startup.
A recent study by the Pew Research Centre said 13 percent of online US adults use Twitter, up from eight percent in November 2010.
