MQM ministers' resignations not accepted: Supreme Court decision on Qureshi to be implemented, says Gilani

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the government would implement apex court decision with respect to Zafar Qureshi of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Talking to media after 13th Annual Award Ceremony of National Highways & Motorway Police here on Saturday, he said that Dr Gulam Nabi Fai's services are immense for Kashmir cause and accusation of Fai contacts with the ISI and are not yet proven. So, he (PM) would not comment on it.
The Prime Minister said that resignations of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) ministers were not accepted and their status is still of ministers. Gilani said that he has sought a report on Malir violence, and added that law and order is a provincial matter, and the federal government respects the mandate of the provinces.
Earlier addressing the function, he said that achievements of the force (Highways & Motorway Police) and its progress are a source of great satisfaction and pride for the nation. The efforts of the Inspector General and all members of the force who are performing their duties with a spirit to serve must be commended.
He said that the Government is committed to providing safety and security to the people. Enforcement of law is always seen as a strict and rigid practice but the Motorway Police is proving to be the soft face of the Government in implementing the law. It is quite pleasing to know that the effectiveness of the friendly culture introduced by this force is bearing results in the form of decrease in accident rates, traffic violations and serious crimes on our highways.
"The initiatives taken by the Motorway Police to educate the public on road safety and traffic rules are also bearing fruit and we can see its positive results in the shape of civilised behaviour on the roads." He appreciated initiatives taken by the force to combat terrorism and stated that terrorism is a challenge that requires readiness and unity of purpose from all segments of society.
The Prime Minister said that the government treats the menace of terrorism as the most daunting challenge facing state and society. He vowed to do everything to empower and enable the National Highways and Motorway Police to combat terrorism. "Let me also take this opportunity to pay homage to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty" he said, adding that their sacrifices would not go down in vain "as they strengthened our resolve" to fight this menace to the very end.
