Ukraine's grain exports fell to 12.7 million tonnes in the 2010/11 season from 21.5 million tonnes in 2009/10, consultancy UkrAgroConsult said on Monday. The volume included 4.16 million tonnes of wheat, 2.79 million tonnes of barley and 5.09 million tonnes of maize, it said.
The sharp fall reflected the fact Ukraine, which harvested 39 million tonnes of grain in 2010 but consumes about 26 million per season, imposed grain export quotas in October in a bid to prevent a rise in domestic bread prices after a fall in the harvest and a jump in global grain prices.
