The US Agency for International Development (USAID) Director for Pakistan Andrew Sisson met with employees at a Multan factory who were hired after completing a US-funded vocational training, says a press release received here on Tuesday. The 150 women who were hired by SM Foods are among the 6, 600 thousand youth who have found jobs after completing USAID's vocational training.
"The United States is committed to helping Pakistani people find gainful employment and build a better future," said USAID's Director for Pakistan Andrew Sisson during the visit. USAID, together with the Farmers Development Organisation (FDO) and the Bahauddin Zakariya University of Multan trained 150 women who are now employed by SM Foods. To ensure that its female employees are able to travel safely between their homes and their workplace, SM Foods has created a special shuttle service.
In 2009 and 2010, USAID partnered with local companies to train 13,000 youth in skills needed in the job market. More than half of these young men and women found employment. The USAID project also established 15 career development centers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Punjab and produced or updated 27 sets of vocational curricula to be used at the centers. In addition to job creation and other economic sector programmes, USAID supports development of Pakistan's energy sector, education, health care, and stabilisation activities in the FATA and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.-PR
