The President of Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association, Aasma Jehangir, has called for non-confrontational policy for the judiciary and the executive for flourishing the democratic system. She was addressing media persons at Kashmir Press Club here late on Thursday.
On the occasion, she was accompanied by the President of DBA, Mirpur, Kamran Tariq, Advocate, and General Secretary, Sanawar Khan Kamali, Advocate, and other senior lawyers. She said that she always opposed confrontation in the larger interest of democracy, and added that she did not support the removal of any government through a decision of the judiciary. Asma said that the judiciary should also refrain from interfering in the affairs of administration.
She categorically said that the judiciary should give its verdicts in line with the law, and the executive should be allowed to perform its work on its own. She added that if the executive did anything wrong, the government concerned would be held answerable to the masses in the next elections. The dignity and honour of the judiciary only lies in performance of its responsibilities within its determined jurisdiction enshrined in the law, she said. The SCBA President, while responding to a question, said that she did not support the government and neither had taken any case of the government nor intended to so.
She pointed out that the Leader of Opposition in the parliament had suggested her name to be a member of the inquiry commission tasked to probe May 2 Abbottabad incident. Asma termed the political parties as a blessing for the country since true democracy could flourish through their sincere and fair role besides the impartial and patriotic role of other components of the state.
