Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza has urged upon the International humanitarian agencies, philanthropic organisations and affluent segments of society to immediately come forward and help the rain and flood affectees in Badin and other areas.
She also urged the World Food Programme (WFP) for its help to avoid possible food starvation in effected areas. Dr Fehmida Mirza said this during her visit to relief camps in Union Council Kazi Kadia in District Badin, says a press release received here on Friday.
The Speaker said that the magnitude of the devastation was so massive that the government resources were inadequate to meet the requirements of the effected population. She said that the National and Provincial Disaster Management authorities still lack the capacity to deal with the intensity of the disaster. Therefore, humanitarian agencies and philanthropist should come forward with their support. She said that in the current crisis women and children were the worst affected.
Dr Fehmida Mirza said that Badin due to its geographical location was prone to cyclones and sea intrusion however, the current rains and floods were unprecedented. She said that millions of acres of standing corps were razed to ground, orchards were damaged, infrastructure and houses was washed away, which will have drastic economic impact on the population. She said that Badin, Thatta and Mirpur Khas District are the food baskets of Sindh, therefore, these areas need special attention for their economic revival. Later on, the Speaker distributed foodstuff, tents, drinking water and other relief material in relief camps in villages Adil Khaskeli, Ghulam Hussain Perhiar, Gul Mohammad Perhiar, Master Noor Mohammad and other surrounding villages.-PR
