Hard red winter wheat basis bids were steady on Tuesday with demand strong as millers and resellers sought supplies. Drought continued to keep a grip on the Plains but farmers pressed ahead with winter wheat seeding, having to "dust in" seed in some areas where soil moisture was extremely short.
The US Department of Agriculture said that 26 percent of the new crop was seeded as of Sunday, with 20 percent of key producer Kansas seeded; 14 percent of Texas planted; and 11 percent of Oklahoma planted. The pace is slower than last year. Protein premiums for rail car wheat to and through Kansas City were steady to 6 cents higher with gains posted for 11.40- through 13.60-pro wheat supplies. Kansas City Board of Trade HRW wheat futures ended higher on Monday with the December up 12-3/4 cents at $7.44.
