Mexico on Thursday opened a new quota to import 150,000 tonnes of sugar to complement the offer in the local market and avoid price pressures for the sweetener. The Ministry of Economy published in Mexico's Official Journal details of how 135,000 tonnes of the quota will be allocated through competitive bidding.
Another 15,000 tonnes will be imported from Nicaragua, a nation that is promised a share of each sugar import quota. This is the second sugar import quota for Mexico this year. The first was for 150,000 tonnes and claimed in full by early August. The new quota, which runs until January 2012, is intended to cover a sugar shortage expected later this year.
