Police is unable to counter the rising crime rate and deteriorating law and order situation here because of them being ill equipped, inadequately trained and insufficient in number. An efficient, well functioning police service is critical to counter insurgency, said Rana Arif Tauseef, Chairman Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) while addressing a joint press conference of trade bodies.
He said that police, being the primary law enforcement agency, is responsible to provide safety and security through control of crime in the city. The police strength is quite insufficient to deal with modern crime and law and order situation, he added. He revealed that only 8,373 policemen are engaged for the safety of 7.4 million people of the city. Elaborating, he said that only one policeman was responsible for the safety of 925 persons while in Lahore, one policeman is engaged for the security of 400 people. Police should be equipped with modern and updated armaments to enable them to keep peace in the city, he added.
Tauseef said that he has urged the public representatives of the city to play their due role to help restore peace in the city. Being public representatives, they have major stake in providing protection and security to the citizens. He demanded the public representatives to play their due role and highlight this issue at highest levels.
Talking about the progress in the case of Khawaja Javed Aziz, PTEA chairman said that according to police sources, 95 percent investigation has been completed and the police have reached near the murderers. Police authorities assured that culprits would be behind the bars in few days. He appreciated the efforts of investigating authorities.
