United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) will develop Code of Practices (CoP) for promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to help Pakistani horticulture producers get access to high end markets with special focus on European markets.
Both these organisations would also take help from the Agriculture Sector Linkages Programme (ASLP) of the Australian government. Initial CoPs were likely to be developed in two weeks time in consultation with these two organisations, which then be consulted with the stakeholders including processors, mango and kinnow growers for finalisation by end of the current year, PHDEC Senior Marketing Manager Kashif Niazi told Business Recorder, here on Thursday.
UNIDO is helping PHDEC programme under European Union (EU) funded Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA-II) programme. UNIDO representatives held round table meeting of all the horticulture stakeholders at PHDEC office on Friday to explain and discuss the objectives and implementation approach of the development and implementation of CoPs, Niazi added.
Kit Chan, an expert explained the modalities of the programme including cluster forming, initiation of Farm Field School approach, training of the master trainers and marketing development.
CEO PHDEC Bashir Hussain assured TRTA/UNIDO delegation that PHDEC would use all its available resources for the implementation of the programme. He urged the stakeholders present at the meeting that they should benefit from the TRTA/UNIDO programme by implementing CoPs at farm and processing unit level. The stakeholders including processors, farmers from kinnow and mango sector showed their confidence in the TRTA/UNIDO programme and hoped that the implementation of the programme would bring better opportunities for them. These CoPs will be ready by the end of the current year and master trainers would be identified for training, Niazi concluded.
