Hundreds of Wapda employees rallied on Tuesday against devolving of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) and proposed privatisation of Wapda. Employees from different Wapda divisions across the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, gathered at headquarter under the banner of Pakistan Wapda Hydro and Electric Central Labour Union, KPK.
The protesting employees wore black ribbon on arms and chanted full-throated slogan against the devolving of Pepco and privatisation of Wapda. Wapda employees across the province, had reached Peshawar in various groups and held a protest rally in front of headquarter building. They were hoisted black flags and banners calling for refraining from winding up income generation institute and Anti-worker policies.
Addressing the protest rally, Tariq Khan, Chairman Wapda Hydro Union, Peshawar division condemned the devolving of Pepco and Wapda privatisation plan, and termed that steps would prove disaster for the institutes. He also expressed concern over appointment of foreign Chief Executive Office (CEO) in Wapda and said that the CEO is not capable to resolve the issues confronting the workers and Wapda.
Ghani-ur-Rehman, Grid Station Officer (GSO), Peshawar said that the employees had out-rightly rejected the proposed plan of Wapda privatisation. He also criticised the government for appointment of foreign CEO in Wapda. He warned that if the government didn't withdraw the privatisation plan, they would suspend electricity supply in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and rest of the country.
