The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday sought reply from the federation and Port Qasim Authority (PQA) on 686 illegal appointments on the verbal orders of Ports and Shipping Minister, Babar Khan Ghauri in the Authority (from grade 1 to 21). However, the SC also directed PQA to pay outstanding amount and allowances to a sacked PQA officer Abdul Jabbar Memon from 2007 to till November 28.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing a petition titled "Abdual Jabbar Memon versus Federation of Pakistan" through Secretary Ministry of Ports and Shipping along with others. Attorney General for Pakistan and petitioner Abdual Jabbar Memon appeared before the court where the petitioner contended that majority of the illegal appointees belong to Central and West districts of Karachi.
Memon further pleaded that provincial quota of other provinces and the rural areas of Sindh was totally ignored, which he said was violation of basic human rights of the deserving candidates from other parts of the country. After the hearing, the bench issued notices to all the respondents of the case and asked them to appear before the court whereas the AGP was directed to present all the relevant record of the appointees.
The hearing was adjourned till December 13.
