Jalal Mehmood Shah, Head of Sindh Bachayo Committee, now opposing the SLGO 2001, had himself contested elections for District Nazim slot twice under the said system of local bodies, Business Recorder has learnt. Sindh Bachayo Committee, an alliance of nationalist parties, was established a few months back when Sindh Governor Dr Ishrtat-ul-Ibad Khan had promulgated the SLGO 2001, and derailed the local government system 1979.
Sindh nationalist parties, including Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party (STP), Awami Tehreek, Sindh United Party (SUP), Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM), Sindh Unity Forum, and others are members of this SBC alliance.
The demand of SBC was restoration of local bodies' system of 1979, and they are still giving warnings to the Sindh government that if SLGO 2001 would be restored again, the SBC will oppose this Musharraf era local government system throughout the province.
They had registered strong protest a few days back against not issuing of notification about the restoration of Comissionerate system by the Sindh government following the lapse of SLGO 2001.
In the first meeting, all party leaders had selected Jalal Mehmood as head of alliance. Jalal is also head of his own political organisation Sindh United Party (SUP).
It is interesting that Jalal himself had contested elections for the slot of District Nazim twice under the ssame local bodies' ordinance. According to information collected by this scribe, Jalal had contested elections for Distrcit Nazim of Jamshoro, had lost.
Asad Sikandar a former PPP leader, had defeated Jalal both times and remained District Nazim of Jamshoro for eight years.
Jalal Mehmood, who remained Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly, is grand son of late GM Syed. After his grandfather's death, Jalal changed the track of politics of his family and dissolved the Jeay Sindh Mahaz, a nationalist party run by his family member Zain Shah.
Later, he had replaced Jeay Sindh Mahaz with Sindh United Party (SUP) and started the parliamentary politics against the ideology of his grandfather GM Syed. Business Recorder tried to get the version of Jalal Mehmood but he could not be reached despite many attempts.
