The former and currently enrolled students of Karachi University's Department of Microbiology in a unanimous resolution demanded the release of their 85-year-old former teacher Professor Dr Syed Muhammad Khalil Chishti, who it said, is languishing in an Indian jail.
A statement issued here on Sunday said that a meeting was presided over by Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University, Professor Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi, who also remained the Chairperson of the Department of Microbiology at the University.
It said that the participants of the meeting expressed deep concern and anguish over the prolonged detention of Professor Khalid in the Indian jail. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shahana said that it is our moral obligation to raise voice at every level for the release of our teacher and a faculty member.
Professor Dr Muhammad Rafi Shaikh, said that Professor Khalil has spent most of his life in the jail and he should be released on humanitarian grounds. It was suggested at the meeting that a core committee be formed, which should prepare a strategy and run a campaign for his release. A resolution was unanimously adopted at the meeting with signature of 150 participants of the meeting demanding the release of Professor Khalil. It also appealed to the human rights organisations in the country to use their good offices to secure the release of Professor Khalil.
