Former Justice Dr Mohammad Ghous, Dean Faculty of Law of Federal Urdu University, said on Friday that corruption "is the one of the basic obstacles" in the way of good governance and progress of the country and the nation. This he said at a seminar on 'Good Governance curbs the Corruption, held at a local hotel.
The seminar was organised by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in collaboration with Transparency International Pakistan to observe the International Day against Corruption. Justice Ghous said that "there is dire need of taking strong initiative" against corruption from top to bottom. "Corruption is the stuff of our lives and we are obliged to live with it,. Only good governance can save our country and the nation from the premature death", he added.
He said that favouritism and nepotism are on the top in every public and private sector. "We all have to individually fight against these evils". The Director-General of Sindh NAB Major Mohammad Shabbir (retired), said that NAB "is working to curb corruption" from the public sector and "all people should help us to work more efficiently".
Advisor to Transparency International Pakistan, Adil Gilani, said that the United Nations had recognised the International Day against Corruption and called a convention in this regard, which was signed by 180 countries. "Pervaiz Musharaf had ratified the said UN convention in August 2007, and unfortunately he himself had issued the National Reconciliation Order (NRO) after 37 days of it", he added.
Her quoted many examples of punishments to bigwigs of foreign governments and said that millions of rupees were found in bank account of a minister of this country but he has been promoted as senior minister instead of being punished. He appealed to all people to come forward against corruption, "otherwise our next generation will not survive in our own country".
A former Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police Niaz A Siddiqui said that this is not the day against corruption but actually this is the day to say "no to corruption". "If the whole nation would take firm stand against corruption, I believe that 50 percent corruption will automatically be decreased", he added. Director General of National Institute of Management, Tauqeer Ahmed, said that the government is accountable to the people and government servants are accountable to the government.
He urged all people living in the country to come forward and play their role to curb corruption from the system. District Project Manager, Youth Parliament of Pakistan, Andeel Ali gave a presentation on the issue through projector and briefly talked about the reasons of corruption. He said that poor governance is the basic reason behind corruption; "so we all should contribute for the betterment of the nation and the country with individual and combined effort".
