The National Assembly today (Monday) may pass the resolution moved by Awami National Party (ANP) chief, Asfandyar Wali Khan, for strengthening democracy in the country on last Friday. Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) have announced to fully support the resolution.
When the resolution was tabled in the house on Friday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) sought time by Monday to decide whether to support or oppose the resolution. However, on Sunday the MQM announced to support the resolution. While, the PML-N proposed three amendments to the resolution that wanted state institutions to act within constitutional limits. The draft of the amendments also calls upon the government "to ensure that all administrative actions are strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the law, for smooth functioning of all state institutions."
The resolution may be approved unanimously if the PPP and its coalition partners accept three amendments of the PML-N.
APP adds: Meanwhile, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has announced to support the pro-democracy resolution in the National Assembly. This was said by Deputy Convenor of the party's Rabita Committee, Dr. Farooq Sattar, while briefing the media after a meeting of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and MQM leaders at Governor House. He said his party's Rabita Committee has decided that the party would fully support the pro-democracy resolution, which would be tabled in the National Assembly by the Awami National Party (ANP) leader Asfandyar Wali Khan.
He informed that he himself, his party's leaders, Haider Abbas Rizvi and Iqbal Qadri attended the meeting, while Interior Minister, A. Rehman Malik represented the PPP in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Rehman Malik expressed gratitude to MQM and its Chief Altaf Hussain for their support.
Rehman Malik appreciated the role of Altaf Hussain for strengthening the democracy in the country. He said the coalition between the PPP and MQM would continue in the future and we would jointly cope with all challenges.
