PM appreciates Telenor's investment in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Wednesday appreciated the investment made by Telenor in Pakistan, which led to employment opportunities.
He was talking to Chief Executive Officer of Telenor Sigve Brekke during a meeting at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Ali Jehangir Siddiqui and senior government officials were also present, said a press release received here.
The prime minister appreciated that Telenor created jobs for around 130,000 Pakistanis, directly and indirectly.
He acknowledged Telenor’s investment in the training and development of its workforce and thanked the Telenor's CEO for providing Pakistanis the opportunity to work in a progressive environment.
While recalling the inauguration of Telenor’s new headquarter in Islamabad, the prime minister said he was pleased to observe the state-of-the-art facility that had set new standards for workplace environment in Pakistan.
Telenor has been operating in Pakistan since 2005 and also launched convenient mobile financial transaction mechanism namely ‘EasyPaisa’. Telenor has so far invested over US$3.5 billion in Pakistan.
The Telenor's CEO thanked the prime minister for facilitating Telenor’s operations in Pakistan and expressed the hope to further expand operations, including trainings to the Pakistani workforce in the latest telecom technologies.
He also indicated that Telenor was actively looking at new investment opportunities in the liberal policy environment and a supportive regulatory regime had provided the incentives for more investment.
