Punjab University's Department of English observed a community service week with the aim of highlighting the importance of community service among students and prepare them to volunteer for the noble activity. The initiative was taken by Chairperson Department of English Dr Amra Raza and was arranged by the Social Work Club of the department headed by Zareena Saeed.
Different activities were held to inculcate amongst students the need and importance of community service. The students were educated that donated service or activity performed by volunteers for the benefit of the public as well as institutions could play a vital role in changing the plight of people facing many economic challenges.
In her lecture, founder of an indigenous NGO 'Aabroo', Rubeena Shakeel, underlined the need of educating the poor and deprived children. She called upon the faculty and students to volunteer to teach at one of such schools as well as contribute by donating house-hold solid waste. On the occasion many students volunteered for the cause.
Tuba Mahmood of the The Citizens Foundation (TCF) invited students to volunteer for the TCF 'Rahber Mentor Programme' and provide logistic as well as financial support to the students at the TCF schools. Dr Amra Raza presented a cheque of rupees 10,000 to the TCF to support a child's education for one year.
