As many as 55,000 Display Centres, mandated to correct mistakes in computerised voter lists, would start functioning across the country from Wednesday. According to an official of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) the Preliminary electoral rolls will be put on more than 55,000 display centres till March 20 to receive all sorts of claims, corrections and objections in this regard.
Display Centres consisting of one official each would be established in mosques, schools, post offices and other prominent places.
The centers have been mandated to enlist the names of the voters, whose names have been missed erroneously or otherwise in the computerised voters' lists.
ECP will also start SMS services from Wednesday, he said adding the eligible voters will have the facility to check their names in the electoral rolls by just sending their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) number through mobile Short Messaging Services (SMS).
The service will help the general public to check the status of their vote conveniently anytime and from anywhere from across Pakistan.
The people will be able to verify their vote registration and particulars in the voters' lists through SMS by paying just Rs 2 per SMS to ECP.
A sender will send his CNIC number to a short code and will subsequently receive a message in Urdu.
It will confirm registration of voter as well as location (electoral area) where voter is registered along with serial number of voter in electoral rolls, he said.
After the introduction of the new service, it would be the responsibility of every eligible voter to make sure that his/her vote had been registered and furthermore to report any discrepancy to the ECP.
He pointed out that it is also for the first time that the enlistment of names in the electoral rolls would continue till the announcement of election schedule.
Revising Authorities are being appointed to hear the objections of the people in PERs. The revising authorities are likely to decide the disputes within a fortnight. Candidates and political parties can obtain voters' lists from the display centers by paying money, he said.
A wide-ranging electronic media campaign will be launched soon to educate and create awareness in general public in this regard.
