Hundreds of dock workers of Port Qasim Monday staged protest demonstration along-with their children, demanding the government to resolve their issues concerning work and salary at the country's second largest harbour. They were demanding of the government to provide the dockers with secure jobs and solve their salary issues.
They said the dockers are facing severe shortage of work as the vessels are being diverted to the private terminal, depriving them of jobs. As a result, they suffer financially. Before reaching Karachi Press Club, they also staged a stationary protest outside PFA office. A labour leader, Gul Muhammad who led the protest rally, spoke at the protest, saying the government should release outstanding dues under heads of their four months salaries. "Dockers could not receive salaries for the last four months," he said. He said the workers of Port Qasim are being denied jobs at the newly dry cargo terminal for the last one year and so, asking the government to ensure their job security.
Children of the dockers also spoke for their fathers' job security and demanded of the government to resolve their salary issue. The protestors had flags, banners and placards in hands, chanting slogans for their rights.
