US commanders say there are no plans to turn the Afghan war over to CIA control after 2014, with special operations answering to American intelligence officials. General James Mattis, who heads US Central Command, and Adm. Bill McRaven, the special operations commander, tell the House Armed Services Committee that no such plans are under way.
The Associated Press reported over the weekend on an early draft of the idea that Pentagon planners were discussing. The idea is one of many that Defence Department officials are considering as they decide how to reduce the US troop presence in Afghanistan, in keeping with the White House plan to end the US combat role by the end of 2014.
