Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Friday said the government and law enforcing agencies are taking serious measures to control extortion and other criminal activities in Karachi. He said that he recently held meetings with law enforcing agencies and stakeholders to improve law and order situation in the mega city. "Over 400 extra personnel of rangers were deputed at Karachi on the request of Karachi police," he said while talking to journalists after a meeting.
Malik said: "We are deeply concerned about the law-and-order situation in Karachi city and government is taking stringent measures against the miscreants and people involved in extortion without any discrimination." Earlier the Interior Minister chaired a meeting regarding security arrangements for the joint session of the Parliament, which was attended by Secretary Interior, Additional Secretary, MOI, Director General, Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Inspector General of Police IGP and other senior police officials held at NADRA Headquarters.
The meeting decided that in addition to strict security arrangements for the day, special parking arrangements for various dignitaries have been made in exclusive enclosures. It was decided that security of Red Zone will be enhanced and without National Identity Card no unauthorised visitor will be allowed to enter Red Zone.
Extensive patrolling will be carried out around the parliament and in Red Zone particularly on foot and horse tracks. Air surveillance of the city and surrounding areas will be carried out before, during and after the parliament session till the participants are dispersed. Surveillance helicopters will have two professional cameramen to make videos of the surveillance. Comprehensive traffic plan will be evolved for joint session of the parliament with inbuilt mechanism for the search of the vehicles. NADRA will provide on line facility at the entry of parliament house, for verifying the ID Cards.
