Provision of free, compulsory education: SHC issues notice to Education Department
A division bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) here on Tuesday issued notices to respondents including Sindh Education Department in a constitutional petition seeking directions for the provincial government for provision of free and compulsory education to children.
The petition was filed by a group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) seeking directions for Government of Sindh for provision of free and compulsory education to children between the age of 5 to 16 year. In public interest litigation, the petitioners stated that under Article 25-A of the constitution and passage of 18th constitutional amendment, the provinces are duty bound to make sure free and compulsory education to children. After preliminary hearing of the petition, the Bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar ordered issuance of notices for May 02, to respondents and Law Officer of Government of Sindh.
