Taiwan stocks ended little changed in cautious trading on Thursday as investors waited for the Finance Ministry to lay out details of a capital gains tax on stock investments later in the day.
The main TAIEX inched up 0.08 percent or 6.25 points at 7,662.92, with tech heavyweights TSMC 0.24 percent higher and smartphone maker HTC ending flat.
Electronics shares climbed 0.29 percent and banks rose 0.46 percent. The ministry is set to announce details of the tax after a reform panel reached a consensus earlier this week to levy the tax starting next year. The Taiwan dollar rose slightly to trade at T$29.517.
