Chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Syed Munawwar Hassan on Saturday vowed to block Nato supplies across the country and foil government's possible move to resume the transportation of fuel and cargo to the alliance's troops in Afghanistan. Addressing a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq along with other key leaders of Defa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC), he warned against the resumption of supplies, and said it would not yield any positive results.
He said that the council was planning to hold grand workers' convention on May 27 on M A Jinnah Road near the Government Islamia College, adding that protestors would stage sit-ins in all divisional headquarters on June 1. DPC leaders, he said, would meet on June 5 to chalk out a programme for the planned 'long march'. He said that the nation was ready to block the US and Nato supplies and claimed that the people would not refrain from rendering any sacrifices to stop the move for the resumption of supplies.
Chief of JI said that all DPC parties believed in the supremacy of law and its protests would be peaceful. Expressing concern over the killing of at least seven passengers near Nawab Shah in a terrorist attack on an Abbotabad-bound bus, he also denounced the firing at a rally in which 12 people were killed in Karachi.
Munawwar Hassan condemned raids on a prominent religious seminary in Akora Khattak run by JUI-S leader Maulana Samiul Haq and said that the government was targeting its political opponents. Chief of Jamatud Dawa Hafiz Muhammad Saeed said that leaders of DPC had previously decided to wait for a suitable time to launch protest drive against the resumption of Nato supplies.
