Minister for Education Punjab, Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said that provincial government is working hard to achieve 88 percent literacy rate till 2015 so that to fulfil the international commitment under millennium development goals. He said that 2,62,500 students under the age of 4 to 15 years are getting education under non-formal basic education schools.
The Minister said that the amount of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund which was started initially with an amount of two billion rupees has now increased to eight billion rupees. He said that financial assistance is being provided to 35 thousand deserving male and female students for higher education under this fund. Provincial Minister said that a target of 1.5 million has been fixed this year for the steps being taken for the promotion of education through Punjab Education Foundation.
While talking to a delegation of students regarding International Children's Rights Day, the Minister said that 2.5 million boy and girl students are getting computer education every year in the province through IT promotion programme of Chief Minister Punjab. He said that the process of distribution of 0.1 million and 25 thousand laptops among talented students under Punjab Chief Minister's Laptops Award has been completed.
He further said that Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) is providing grant and scholarships to the private educational institutions and students as the private educational institutions are performing a valuable service in the field of education. The government is fully aware of its responsibility in developing educational sector by providing the basic education and this is the reason that government has launched primary enrolment campaign to achieve 100 percent literacy rate in the province, he concluded.
