Sindh Minister for Law and Prisons Ayaz Soomro has said that comprehensive plan is under implementation to convert the prisons into reforming houses. He said that closed industrial units have been rehabilitated, while computer and other training centres of different trades have also been restarted for the skill development of the prisoners, the minister informed this while addressing the news conference at local circuit house on Saturday evening.
In addition to these facilities, he said that legislation is also in the way to change and improve the jail manual and provide more facilities to the prisoners. He said that, security of each prison was challenging task for his ministry as such equipment including sophisticated weapons have been recently purchased at the cast of Rs 60 million.
The minister further informed that health facilities to prisoners have also been increased adding that his department is recruiting its own doctors for jail hospitals. He said that system for interviewing with prisoners now has been improved and facilitated by introducing video conference. Public call offices in each prison while Skype communication facility has also been offered to the prisoners to remain in contact with their family members. Besides the recruitment of more security staff would also be made with in 15 days, he said.
Responding to a question, the minister agreed that an amount of Rs 400 million has been lapsed due to non-utilisation. However, necessary inquiry in to matter will be conducted to fix the responsibility, he added. Responding to another question, the minister said that the province at present has the Local Government Law 1979 but the government is working on to introduce new Local Government Law 2012 for which negotiation with coalition partners are in progress and about 80 percent consensus has so far been developed.
Replying to another supplementary question, he said that the local government election at this stage will affect the general elections that according to him might be conducted after March 2013. Besides, he said the issues including fresh demarcation, and no census are the hurdles in conducting local bodies elections before the general elections. While responding to another question about establishment of Zulfiqarabad, the minister termed it a great project for the prosperity of Sindh as this project will improve the socio economic condition of the local people.
Criticising those who posing themselves as nationalists, Ayaz Soomro said that no political party or political leader has sacrificed for people of Sindh except the leaders and workers of PPP for the restoration of democracy and rights for the people. Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgari was also present on the occasion. Earlier, Sindh Minister for Law, Prisons Ayaz Soomro distributed 400 Zakat cheques each of Rs 5000 among the rain and flood affected people.
