A fire erupted on Sunday at a UNHCR warehouse near the Haji Camp in Peshawar, destroying a huge of stock of tents, non-food items and other equipment. According to official, the fire broke out at 2pm in the afternoon. Rescue 1122 and PDA Fire Brigade staff rushed to the scene, but were unable to douse the flames despite hectic efforts lasting more than six hours.
A portion of UNHCR warehouse was partially damaged after the wall collapsed. Sources said that they were still unable to say what caused the fire - whether it was an electrical short-circuit or other reason.
The provincial spokesperson for UNHCR said that the items, including tents, non-food items and plastic sheets, had been stocked there for coping with emergency situations.
According to Rescue 1122's Uroj Sherazi, the exact extent of losses would be ascertained after they managed to put out the fire. He said that around 25,000 tents had been stocked inside the UNHCR warehouse.
