ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser Thursday constituted a Parliamentary Committee on Legislative Business to discuss and consider legislations for approval of joint-sitting of the Parliament.

The both houses of the Parliament have empowered the Speaker National Assembly to constitute a parliamentary committee by passing motions separately. The Parliamentary Committee on Legislative Business was constituted under motions passed by the National Assembly and the Senate separately on 22nd and 23rd July, 2020 respectively.

The Parliamentary Committee will comprise 24 Members of Parliament with Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi as its chairman. The Federal Ministers Pervez Khattak, Asad Umar, Shafqat Mehmood, Senator Shibli Faraz, Shirin Mazari and Minister of State Ali Muhammad Khan, MNAs and Senators Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar, Senator Dr Farogh Naseem, Senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar and Ghous Bakhsh Khan will be part of the committee. Whereas Advisers to the Prime Minister Dr. Zaheeruddin Babar Awan and Mirza Shehzad Akbar will also be the Members of the committee.

MNAs and Senators from opposition parties namely Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Rana Sanaullah, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhry, Senator Muhammad Javed Abbasi, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Syed Naveed Qamar, Senator Sherry Rehman, Senator Farooq Hamid Naik and Shahida Akhtar Ali will be Members of the committee.

The first meeting of the committee has been convened on Thursday at 5.30 pm in the Parliament House. The parliamentary committee discussed the Anti-Terrorism Amendment Bill 2020 and the United Nations (Security Council) Amendment Bill 2020 as passed by the relevant standing committees and referred to the Parliamentary Committee by the House.

while chairing the maiden meeting of Parliamentary Committee on Legislative Business, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Hussain Qureshi Minister for Foreign Affairs and chairman Parliamentary Committee on Legislative Business has said that the incumbent Parliamentary leadership believes in consensus based Legislation as the consensus and consultation with Opposition parties and other stakeholders can ensure parliamentary supremacy in the country. He remarked that both treasury and the opposition benches together can ensure legislation for the benefits of the people and the country.

The member of the Committee were of the view that bills in question need further discussion, therefore, taking into account their suggestions, the Committee decided to meet again on coming Monday for further discussion.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Pervez Khattak, Asad Umar, Shafqat Mehmood, Senator Shibli Faraz, Shirin Mazari and MoS Ali Muhammad Khan, Advisers to the Prime Minister Dr. Zaheeruddin Babar Awan and Mirza Shehzad Akbar, MNAs and Senators Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhry, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Syed Naveed Qamar, Shahida Aktha Ali, Sherry Rehman, Farooq Hamid Naik and senior officers of the concerned Ministries.

Talking to media after committee meeting, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the government has decided to submit proposed drafts for amendments in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws and in the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) law to the Opposition today (Friday) so that they can read it. He said that in the second meeting of this parliamentary committee in which we will take this agenda forward.
