Six electrocuted to death as rain, power outages bring more misery for Karachiites

(Karachi) At least six people were electrocuted to death after heavy rain lashed Karachi on Friday leaving several roads flooded, media reported.

As per details, monsoon rains hit the city, including, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Saddar, Defence and Clifton. Rainfall waterlogged many localities which led to clogging of many roads.

Six people died of electrocution in rain related incidents in the city. A 24-year-old woman was electrocuted in Baloch Colony area. Area Station House Officer Ihsan Channa said Farzana Hanif died when she suffered an electric shock inside her home In Junejo Town. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) to fulfil legal formalities.

In another incident, an 18-year-old, Kaiser Nawaz, died due to electrocution at a shop in Landhi-4, an Edhi Foundation spokesperson said.

A 30-year-old man also died after suffering an electric shock on a street near Jangian Hotel in Chakiwara area of Lyari, according to a Chippa spokesperson. The body was shifted to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi.

Meanwhile in Sujrani Town, a 12-year-old boy drowned in a pond of accumulated rainwater. Police said some children were swimming in the pool in Sector 7-D when Talha Tanzeem, 12, drowned and died.

In a similar incident, a six-year-old boy fell into a drain in Banaras area of Orangi Town, according to Edhi Foundation and Pirabad Police.

In a recent spell, several motorists got stuck at various intersections and roads that were almost flooded.

Traffic jam was also witnessed on major arteries, including I.I. Chundrigar Road and Sharah-e-Faisal. Besides, many power feeders tripped during the heavy rain, disrupting electric supply to many localities.

Meanwhile, the Met office predicted that the recent spell will continue till Saturday (August 8). It stated that this year 10 percent more rains are expected in Sindh as compared to previous year. It also warned of floodings in the province.

A monsoon low pressure from Bay of Bengal has approached Sindh on Thursday. Under the influence of this weather system strong monsoon currents penetrated in Sindh.

According to the advisory, widespread rain/wind-thundershowers, with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Tharparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tando Allah Yar, Matiyari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro, Dadu and Shaheed Benazirabad from Thursday (evening/night) to Saturday.
