Record torrential rain on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu Thursday killed 10 people and left 18 missing in flooding and landslides, news reports said. Authorities in the prefectural capital of Kumamoto issued an evacuation order for about 48,000 residents, the Kyodo News agency reported.
Blackouts hit about 10,000 households in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, the Kyushu Electric Power Co told the agency. Railway services and road traffic were suspended, while some bullet train services were temporarily halted in the island's north and centre.
In Aso and Minami Aso, houses had been swept away by landslides as some part of the areas were hit by a record 500 millimetres of rain, broadcaster NHK reported. The police said 9 people died and 17 went missing, the report said.
