KARACHI: In response to concerns expressed over pathetic traffic condition in Karachi, particularly in the old city area and the industrial town zones, the DIG of Traffic, Javed Ali Mahar, has asked the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry to nominate a team so that they and the traffic police could visit those areas and provide relief to the people.

Speaking at a meeting of the KCCI, the DIG of Traffic said regular meetings would be held with the team. Javed Mahar said that traffic police officers were the worst sufferers of the disaster caused by the rains as they faced immense hardships in efficiently discharging their duties on the broken roads of Karachi and yet they continued to work hard.

He said that in view of the rising number of vehicles, Karachi desperately needed a mass transit system. On completion of the Green Line Project and the Red Line Project along with the Karachi Circular Railway Project, the people would certainly get a sigh of relief.

He said that all the suggestions given by the KCCI for improving the performance of FM88.6 would certainly be considered, and it would be used as an effective tool to raise awareness amongst the masses about traffic rules and regulations.

KCCI President Shariq Vohra pointed out that frequent traffic jams also terribly affected industrial activities in all the seven industrial town zones of Karachi.

It was a matter of grave concern that movement of heavy vehicles from the port in Karachi to other areas of the city and also to the upcountry was allowed for hardly eight-to-10-hours a day. Due to the limited timing for movement of trucks carrying imported and exportable consignments, the business community often suffered serious losses, he said.

The KCCI president underscored the need for establishing two exclusive corridors for heavy vehicles which must connect Karachi Port with the highways so that the heavy vehicles could move to the upcountry without damaging the roads of the city.

"The DIG of Traffic must raise this demand at the highest level which would be highly appreciated by the business community," he added.
