LAHORE: A few months after the occurrence of Lahore-Sialkot motorway gang-rape case, the Punjab police on Sunday launched the 'Women Safety App' with an aim to improve protection of females during emergency situation throughout the province.

"After registering themselves on this app, women across the province can get services of Punjab police's emergency helpline 15, Rescue 1122, Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) and Motorway Police," said Punjab IGP Inam Ghani while speaking at the launching of the app.

Besides connecting with law enforcement agencies (LEAs), the app, based on the feedbacks of people, would guide the uses which places are secure, partially secure or not secure for travel. It will also offer live emergency chat with the LEAs besides creating awareness among the people regarding laws and penalties in case a woman or a child is subjected to violence or deprived of their right. The app hit more than 10,000 downloads on the first day of its launching.

"Protection and immediate solution to the problems being faced by women is among the top priorities of the Punjab police and that is why we have launched the Women Safety App in Punjab by using modern technology," said the IG said. He said the application was developed with effective use of information technology so that the process of protection of women can be improved and women have the least amount of trouble in a difficult situation.

He added that an awareness video was also released regarding the method of download and the use of this app through which all female students, working ladies and housewives can immediately download it in their mobile phones. "Apart from the Women Safety App, the Punjab police are on high-alert for prevention of crimes against women and children and steps will be taken on priority basis to prevent such crimes," he vowed and declared the app as a masterpiece of modern technology, a simple mobile app that can be downloaded and used on all Android mobile phones.
