Standing crops of rice and cotton on 400 acres of land were washed away in Sanghar district due to a breach in Jumrao Canal RD 164-165 owing to the negligence of Irrigation department's officials here on Wednesday. Sources in Irrigation department told Business Recorder that a breach occurred in Jumrao Canal RD 164-165 near Bhaji Khan village of Shahdadpur, district Sanghar.
The breach occurred in the morning on Wednesday when 1500 cusecs of water was flowing in the canal against its capacity of 250 cusecs, they added. The villagers had companied to the local officials of Irrigation department many times regarding the overflow of the canal but nobody paid any heed to their complaints, they said.
Due to the breach, standing crops of rice and cotton on 400 acres were washed away while more than 1000 families were affected. The breach affected about 10 villages located in suburbs including Askarabad village, Samad Keerio village, Muhabat Brohi village, Guhram Khan village, Muhabat Sanjrro village, Bismillah Shaikh village, Ali Bux Shaikh village, Sharif Brohi village and Hiji Qurban village, they said.
Sindh Relief department has sent a team to the affected areas to help the people. Advisor to Chief Minister for Relief Haleem Adil Shaikh told Business Recorder that he had rushed to the affected areas soon after the breach and met with local people and the administration.
He said he had asked Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sanghar to provide tents to the families, whose homes have been damaged due to the breach.
He said that the department had already sent 1000 tents to every district as precautionary measures to protect people from the expected heavy rains/floods in this monsoon season.
He said DC Sanghar had been asked to survey the damages to standing crops due to the breach. Sindh government would provide compensation to them, he added.
