The Lahore High Court Chief Justice here on Wednesday giving last opportunity to PML-N MNA, Rao Mazhar Hayat for provision of evidence about the genuineness of his degree obtained from a US university adjourned the proceedings to September 23. The court also directed the counsel to come up concrete arguments in favour of the respondent's degree.
Two citizens Irshad Ibrahim and Javed Badr challenged the degree of Rao Mazhar Hayat obtained form Wenoira University, USA. They contended that the respondent contested the general election in 2008 from constituency of NA-138, Kasur They alleged that the said university had not verified the degree of the MNA when Higher Education Commission had asked it to verify the same.
They said the US university had stated that Hayat never studied at the university and his degree was fake one The petitioners said the respondent violated several provisions of People Representation Act 1976. Kasur police also registered a FIR against him after the Election Commission took up the matter of fake degrees. They said despite these facts, the election commission had not de-notified the respondent from the assembly membership.
The petitioners therefore prayed to the court to declare Rao Mazhar Hayat disqualified from being Member National Assembly. On the other side, counsel of the respondent MNA argued that the degree possessed by his client was guanine, however, he was a defaulter of the American university. He said the university had not issued the degree due to non payment of some dues. The counsel opposed the petition and said an inquiry in this matter was still pending with the election commission.
