The compilation being introduced here is about Professor Mumtaz Hussain whose contribution to Urdu literature is incomparable in many respects. He was among a few writers, particularly critics who kept themselves abreast with the developments in the worlds of science, technology and of course politics and their impact on the society at large - hence having a vision.
He was bold enough to express his views without caring for the consequences and suffered them with a smiling face and never asked for compensation. To express gratitude for his services 'Irtiqa Adabi Forum', and Anjuman Traqqi Pasand Musannafeen (Progressive Writer's Association) Pakistan-Karachi decided to start holding Mumtaz Hussain Memorial Lectures. And Dr Jamal Naqvi has rightly appreciated the co-operation extended in this venture by Mumtaz Sahib's family.
The book includes lectures delivered as memorial lectures and some other writings which deal with various aspects of the intellectual pursuits of Professor Mumtaz Hussain. It starts with a note by Syed Shahid Mumtaz, the son as Publisher - Foreword by Dr Jamal Naqvi, bio data and the list of publications by Dr Naheed Sultan, the daughter. A pen sketch by Dr Aslam Farrukhi, Ahmed Hamadani has looked into Professor Mumtaz's library criticism, Professor Sahar Ansari has evaluated Mumtaz Hussain as marxist critic. A glance at Mumtaz Hussain by Dr Irtiza Karim.
Modernism and after by Dr Manzoor Ahmed. New world order - post modernism and literature by Dr Muhammad Ali, Dr Anwar Ahmed has described writer reader, society and obtaining realities and Dr Jafar Ahmed looks at the present day situation and progressivism.
There are three write ups, rather critical studies of Mumtaz Sahib's essays namely: Risala dar marafat-e-isteaara, Hali key sheri nazaryat and Amir Khusro in the eyes of Mumtaz Hussain written by Mumtaz Sahib himself, Dr Kalimur Rahman and Zamir Niazi respectively. Finally there are opinions of prominent intellectuals collected by Sultan Ahmad, the son-in-law. There can be no two opinions that the book contains a large amount of food for thought. But there is still much to be written about Professor Mumtaz Hussain.
