ISLAMABAD: The overall output of the Large Scale Manufacturing Industries (LSMI) decreased by 4.15 percent in February 2021 compared to January 2021, shows the data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) Tuesday.
According to the provisional Quantum Index numbers of the Large Scale Manufacturing Industries (QIM), the LSMI output increased by 4.85 percent for February 2021 compared to February 2020, and decreased by 4.15 percent, if compared to January 2021.
The output of the LSMI increased by 7.45 percent in the first eight months (July-February) of 2020-21 compared to July-February 2019-20, as most of the major manufacturing sectors posted growth.
The LSMI Quantum Index Number (QIM) was recorded at 149.88 points during July-February 2020-21 against 139.49 points during the same period of the preceding year.
The LSM data released by the PBS after collecting it from the Provincial Bureau of Statistics (BOS), the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) and the Ministry of Industries showed that the OCAC recorded month-on-month negative growth of 6.60 percent in February 2021 against previous month, and 42.66 percent growth was recorded year-on-year in February 2021 against February 2020.
The data showed that the Ministry of Industry-related sectors witnessed a decrease of 8.16 percent in February 2021 against January 2021 on MoM basis, while on Year-on-Year basis, it registered a growth of 3.16 percent in February 2021 as compared with same month of 2020.
The PBS data said the LSM-related data to the BOS month-on-month witnessed 9.82 percent growth in February 2021 against the previous month, and on YoY basis, the BOS witnessed growth of 4.83 percent in February 2021 against February 2020. The production in July-February 2020-21 as compared to July-February 2019-20 has increased in textile, food, beverages and tobacco, coke and petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, non-metallic mineral products, automobiles and fertilisers, while it decreased in electronics, leather products, engineering products, paper and board, and rubber products,
Textile, the top contributing sector to the overall big industry output, increased by 2.69 percent, food, beverages and tobacco 15.75 percent, coke and petroleum products 7.94 percent, pharmaceuticals 12.09 percent, chemicals 10.83 percent, automobiles 14.66 percent, non-metallic mineral products 20.77 percent, paper and fertilisers 5.66 percent during July-February 2020-21 compared to the same period last year.
The sectors showing decline during July-February 2020-21 compared to July-February 2019-20 included iron and steel products output declined by 1.39 percent, electronics 24.36 percent, engineering products 29.62, leather products 40.49 percent, wood products 51.30 percent, robber products 10.73 percent, and paper and board 1.07 percent.
The petroleum products witnessed an increase of 7.94 percent as its output went up from 8.72 billion litres during July-February 2019-20 to 9.41 billion litres in July-February 2020-21, while on YoY basis the petroleum sector witnessed growth of 42.66 percent as its output increased from 760 million litres in February 2020 to 1.084 billion litres in February 2021.
High-speed diesel witnessed 13.93 percent growth as its output remained 3.651 billion litres during July-February 2020-21 compared to 3.02 billion litres during the same period of last year, and 81 percent growth in February 2021, and remained 420.45 million litres compared to 232.28 million litres during the same period of last year.
Furnace oil witnessed 9.97 percent growth in output and remained 188.92 million litres in February 2021 compared to 171.79 million litres in February 2020 and 5.47 percent growth in July-February 2020-21, and remained 1.838 billion litres compared to 1.743 billion litres during the same period of last year.
Motor spirit witnessed 55.40 percent increase in February 2021 and remained 258.248 million litres compared to 166.34 million in February 2020 and witnessed 21.07 percent growth in July-February 2020-21, and remained 2.22 billion litres compared to 1.836 billion litres during the same period of last year.
The LPG witnessed 31.36 percent growth in February 2021 and remained 68.57 million litres compared to 52.20 million litres in February 2020 and 8.63 percent growth in July-February 2020-21, and remained 580.82 million litres compared to 534.79 million litres during the same period of last year.
According to the PBS data, sugar production witnessed 28.92 percent growth as its output remained 5.303 million tonnes during July-February 2020-21 compared to 4.11 million tonnes during the same period of last year, and 1.1 percent growth in February 2021 and remained 1.495 million tonnes compared to 1.478 million tonnes, during the same period of last year.
Cement witnessed 21.58 percent growth during July-February 2020-21 and remained 32.909 million tonnes compared to 27.067 million tonnes during the same period of last year, and registered 11.68 percent growth in February 2021, and remained 4.053 million tonnes compared to 3.629 million tonnes during the same period of last year.
